Wilsthorpe School is celebrating the remarkable achievement of one of its students, Joe, who has won a silver medal at the prestigious Aquatics GB Next Generation Championships – just seven weeks after breaking his collarbone.
The championships bring together some of the most talented young swimmers from across Great Britain, making Joe’s success all the more impressive. Competing against the country’s best emerging athletes, Joe secured a silver medal in the 100m backstroke and is still preparing to race in the 200m backstroke and 200m Individual Medley later this week.
What makes the achievement particularly inspiring is the adversity Joe has overcome. Just seven weeks ago, he suffered a broken collarbone while playing football at school. For a young athlete whose life revolves around swimming, the injury could easily have derailed his season.
Instead, Joe approached his recovery with determination and resilience. Supported by his coaching team at Repton Swimming, he undertook a carefully managed rehabilitation programme that included physiotherapy, adapted strength and conditioning work, and extensive fitness training. Amazingly, he was back in the pool after only two weeks, spending weeks refining his technique and maintaining his fitness while swimming with just one arm.
To return to national-level competition so quickly—and immediately win a silver medal—is a testament to Joe’s dedication, work ethic and perseverance.
Joe’s commitment to his sport is evident every day. He trains six days a week, including before-school sessions twice a week, balancing an intense programme of swimming, schoolwork, friendships and family life. Despite the demands of elite sport, he remains grounded and focused on continual improvement.
His swimming journey began when he was six years old at Long Eaton Swimming Club, where his passion for competitive swimming first developed. Earlier this year, he joined Repton Swimming to further develop his potential and compete at the highest level.
Speaking about his achievements, staff at Wilsthorpe School praised Joe’s determination and positive attitude. Derek Hobbs, Headteacher, said: “Joe’s achievement is absolutely outstanding. We are immensely proud of Joe and look forward to following his progress in the years ahead.”
Looking to the future, Joe has ambitious goals. His focus remains on becoming the best swimmer he can be and continuing to improve with every training session and competition. Whether that journey eventually leads to the Olympic Games remains to be seen, but his commitment, talent and perseverance suggest an exciting future lies ahead.
