“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.  If you talk to him in his own language, it goes to his heart.”  Nelson Mandela.

At Wilsthorpe, students have the opportunity to study one of two languages, French or Spanish, guided by specialist teachers. Lessons take place in well-equipped classrooms and we also have access to a computer suite and laptops to enhance language learning through the use of online and interactive programmes. We believe that all students should have interesting and varied language lessons and students are encouraged to be creative in their use of French or Spanish.  Students will also explore cultural aspects through activities such as French breakfasts and Spanish tapas tasting or creating fashion shows.  Furthermore, we believe that the trips to France and Spain are an important part of language learning as well as the development of cultural understanding. In previous years, we have organised Year 7 Day-Trips to France with a French breakfast stop, pancake making and time for some souvenir shopping before heading home. The Year 8 students have participated in a three-day residential trip to France where students enjoyed a variety of cultural activities including pancake making, a trip to a chocolate factory, beach games and competitions whilst away.  There have also been Barcelona trips for the Year 9, 10 and 11 Spanish students.

‘A different language is a different vision of life.’ Frederico Felini.

In Year 7, students have 5 lessons of French or Spanish per fortnight.  The first half term is used to ensure all students familiarise themselves with the basics as well as allowing those with prior knowledge of French/Spanish to expand upon their previous learning.  Lessons then move on to explore home and family, school, hobbies and holidays.

In Year 8, students also have 5 lessons of French or Spanish.  The topics include free time activities, mealtimes, Paris/Madrid, house and home.

In Year 9, students continue with 5 lessons French or Spanish.  In French we move onto topics such as technology, future plans, arranging holidays, healthy lifestyle and going out.  In Spanish, topics include free time, the world of work, healthy lifestyles, global issues and holiday plans.

“One language sets you a corridor for life.  Two languages open every door along the way.”  Frank Smith.

Students have 6 lessons per fortnight in Year 10 and 11. French and Spanish use the AQA exam specification. At the end of Year11 students will complete exams in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The four skills are equally weighed.

In both languages the topics include three main themes: identity and culture, local, national, international and global areas of interest and current and future study and employment. Lessons expand on a variety of key skills such as grammar and translation work, acquired in KS3, incorporating the use of IT, videos, authentic materials, including cultural elements such as television, media and music.
