On Monday 22nd June, students from all schools within The Two Counties Trust gathered together at Swanwick Hall School to compete in our inaugural school vs school Maths Competition.
Led by Trust Assistant Headteacher and Maths Teacher Mr Storey, teams were presented with a range of worksheets and questions to challenge their knowledge and test their teamwork. The questions presented a range of scenarios asking students not to just use their maths skills but also to think about the questions logically, and tactically. For example, one task centred around completing a number-based crossword which definitely got students’ thinking! Each school team needed to think carefully about how the numbers in the crossword were connected. If they were struggling, they could choose to forfeit a point to reveal a number, though their competitive spirit often made them reluctant to do so.
As we all know, a Maths Competition is never complete without a ‘Countdown’ style number round. Mr Storey took this concept one step further by turning this challenge into a time trial with students gaining more points depending on how quickly they could answer the question.

Speaking on the day, Tilly a Year 8 student from Wilsthorpe School said:
‘I enjoyed today because it was a chance to work as a team with different people as well as bond with other students who share my love for Maths’.
Mr Storey also added:
‘I’m very proud of all the schools within TTCT today, every single team managed to achieve a first-place score in at least one round, which is a very impressive feat. As with all of our events this year, students conducted themselves well and committed to the challenge of the event. Everyone had a great morning and we look forward to repeating the event next year’.
All students performed brilliantly, setting a fantastic example for their peers. The final results saw Allestree Woodlands in third place with 188 points, Springwell Community College in second with 195 points and Ashfield School crowned overall winners with 201 points.
Across this academic year TTCT students have taken part in a variety of exciting challenges, all part of our commitment to providing students enriching experiences outside of the classroom. Kicking off with an all-school chess competition, the programme has also included a big quiz, a baking competition and a poetry recital. These events have provided valuable opportunities for students to engage in friendly competition beyond traditional inter-school sports. On behalf of our students, we would like to extend a sincere thank you to all TTCT staff who have worked hard to make these events possible.
